A Wolf’s Tale

Wit all er g brot ers and sisters off to sc ool, our ranc became a lonely place for our t ree-year-old daug ter, Becky. S e longed for playmates. Cattle and orses were too g to cuddle and farm mac inery dangerous for a c ild so **all. We promised to buy er a puppy but in t e meantime, “Pretend” puppies popped up nearly every day.

I ad just finis ed was ing t e lunc dis es w en t e screen door slammed and Becky rus ed in, c eeks flus ed wit excitement. “Mama!” s e cried, “Come see my new doggy! I gave im water two times already. He’s so t irsty!”

I sig ed, anot er of Becky’s imaginary dogs.

“Please come, Mama.” S e tugged at my jeans, er brown eyes pleading, “He’s crying ― and e can’t walk!”

“Can’t walk?” Now t at was a twist. All er previous make-believe dogs could do marvelous t ings. One balanced a ball on t e end of its nose. Anot er dug a ole t at went all t e way t roug t e eart and fell out on a star on t e ot er side. Still anot er danced on a tig trope. W y suddenly a dog t at couldn’t walk?

“All rig t, oney,” I said. By t e time I tried to follow er, Becky ad already disappeared into t e mesquite.

“W ere are you?” I called.

“Over ere by t e oak stump. Hurry, Mama!”

I parted t e t orny branc es and raised my and against t e glare of t e Arizona sun. A num ng c ill gripped me. T ere s e was, sitting on er eels, toes dug firmly in t e sand, and cradled in er lap was t e unmistakable ead of a wolf! Beyond its ead rose massive black s oulders. T e rest of t e body lay completely idden inside t e ollow stump of a fallen oak.

“Becky,” My mout felt dry. “Don’t move.” I stepped closer. Pale-yellow eyes narrowed. Black lips tig tened, exposing double sets of two-inc fangs. Suddenly t e wolf trembled. Its teet clacked, and a piteous w ine rose from its t roat.

“It’s all rig t, boy,” Becky crooned. “Don’t be afraid. T at’s my mama, and s e loves you, too.”

T en t e unbelievable appened. As er tiny ands stroked t e great s aggy ead, I eard t e gentle t ump, t ump, t umping of t e wolf’s tail from deep inside t e stump. W at was wrong wit t e animal? I wondered. W y couldn’t e get up? I couldn’t tell. Nor did I dare to step any closer.

I glanced at t e empty water bowl. My memory flas ed back to t e five skunks t at last week ad torn t e burlap from a leaking pipe in a frenzied effort to reac water during t e final agonies of ra es. Of course! Ra es! Warning signs ad been posted all over t e county, and adn’t Becky said, “He’s so t irsty?” I ad to get Becky away.

“Honey,” My t roat tig tened. “Put is ead down and come to Mama. We’ll go find elp.”

Reluctantly, Becky got up and kissed t e wolf on t e nose before s e walked slowly into my outstretc ed arms. Sad yellow eyes followed er. T en t e wolf’s ead sank to t e ground. Wit Becky safe in my arms, I ran to t e barns w ere Brian, one of our cow ands, was saddling up to c eck eifers in t e Nort pasture. “Brian! Come quickly. Becky found a wolf in t e oak stump near t e was ! I t ink it as ra es!”

“I’ll be t ere in a jiffy,” e said as I urried back to t e ouse, eager to put Becky down for er nap. I didn’t want er to see Brian come out of t e bunk ouse. I knew e’d ave a gun.

“But I want to give my doggy is water,” s e cried. I kissed er and gave er some stuffed animals to play wit .

“Honey, let Mom and Brian take care of im for now,” I said. Moments later, I reac ed t e oak stump.

Brian stood looking down at t e beast. “It’s a Mexican lobo, all rig t.” He said, “And a g one!”

T e wolf w ined. T en we bot caug t t e **ell of gangrene. “W ew! It’s not ra es,” Brian said. “But e’s sure urt real bad. Don’t you t ink it’s best I put im out of is misery?”

T e word “yes” was on my lips, w en Becky emerged from t e bus es. “Is Brian going to make im well, Mama?” S e auled t e animal’s ead onto er lap once more, and buried er face in t e coarse, dark fur. T is time I wasn’t t e only one w o eard t e t umping of t e lobo’s tail.

T at afternoon my u**and, Bill, and our veterinarian came to see t e wolf. Observing t e trust t e animal ad in our c ild, Doc said to me, “Suppose you let Becky and me tend to t is fella toget er.” Minutes later, as c ild and vet reassured t e stricken beast, t e ypodermic found its mark. T e yellow eyes closed.

“He’s asleep now,” said t e vet. “Give me a and ere, Bill.” T ey auled t e massive body out of t e stump. T e animal must ave been over five feet long and well over a undred pounds. Bullets ad mutilated t e wolf’s ip and leg. Doc did w at e ad to in order to clean t e wound and t en gave t e patient a dose of penicillin. Next day e returned and ed a metal rod to replace t e missing bone.

“Well, it looks like you’ve got yourselves a Mexican lobo,” Doc said. “He looks to be about t ree years old, and even as pups, t ey don’t tame real easy. I’m amazed at t e way t is g fella took to your little girl. But often t ere’s somet ing t at goes on between c ildren and animals t at we grownups don’t understand.”

Becky named t e wolf Ralp and carried food and water to t e stump every day. Ralp ’s recovery was not easy. For t ree mont s e dragged is injured indquarters by clawing t e eart wit is front paws. From t e way e lowered is eyelids w en we massaged t e limbs, we knew e endured excruciating pain, but not once did e ever try to te t e ands of t ose w o cared for im.

Four mont s to t e day, Ralp finally stood unaided. His uge frame s ook as long-unused muscles were activated. Bill and I patted and praised im. But it was Becky to w om e turned for a gentle word, a kiss or a **ile. He responded to t ese gestures of love by swinging is busy tail like a pendulum. As is strengt grew, Ralp followed Becky all over t e ranc .

Toget er t ey roamed t e desert pastures, t e golden- aired c ild often stooping low, s aring wit t e great lame wolf w ispered secrets of nature’s wonders. W en evening came, e returned like a silent s adow to is ollow stump t at ad surely become is special place.

As time went on, alt oug e lived primarily in t e brus , t e a ts of t is timid creature endeared im more and more to all of us. His reaction to people ot er t an our family was yet anot er story. Strangers terrified im, yet is affection for and protectiveness of Becky broug t im out of t e desert and fields at t e sig t of every unknown pickup or car. Occasionally e’d approac , lips taut, exposing a nervous **ile full of c attering teet .

More often e’d simply pace and finally skulk off to is tree stump, per aps to worry alone.

Becky’s first day of sc ool was sad for Ralp . After t e bus left, e refused to return to t e yard. Instead, e lay by t e side of t e road and waited.

W en Becky returned, e limped and tottered in wild, joyous circles around er. T is welcoming ritual persisted t roug out er sc ool years.

Alt oug Ralp seemed appy on t e ranc , e disappeared into t e surrounding deserts and mountains for several weeks during t e spring mating season, leaving us to worry about is safety. T is was calving season, and fellow ranc ers watc ed for coyotes, cougars, wild dogs and, of course, t e lone wolf. But Ralp was lucky.

During Ralp ’s twelve years on our ranc , is a ts remained unc anged. Always keeping is distance, e tolerated ot er pets and endured t e activities of our busy family, but is love for Becky never wavered.

T en t e spring came w en our neig bor told us e’d s ot and killed a s e-wolf and grazed er mate, w o ad been running wit er. Sure enoug , Ralp returned ome wit anot er bullet wound. Becky, nearly fifteen years old now, sat wit Ralp ’s ead resting on er lap. He, too, must ave been about fifteen and was gray wit age. As Bill removed t e bullet, my memory raced back t roug t e years. Once again I saw a c ubby t ree-year-old girl stroking t e ead of a uge black wolf and eard a **all voice murmuring, “It’s all rig t, boy. Don’t be afraid. T at’s my mama, and s e loves you, too.”

Alt oug t e wound wasn’t serious, t is time Ralp didn’t get well. Precious pounds fell away. T e once luxurious fur turned dull and dry, and is trips to t e yard in searc of Becky’s companions ip ceased. All day long e rested quietly. But w en nig t fell, old and stiff as e was, e disappeared into t e desert and surrounding ills. By dawn is food was gone. T e morning came w en we found im dead. T e yellow eyes were closed.

Stretc ed out in front of t e oak stump, e appeared but a s adow of t e proud beast e once ad been. A lump in my t roat c oked me as I watc ed Becky stroke is s aggy neck, tears streaming down er face. “I’ll miss im so,” s e cried.

T en as I covered im wit a blanket a strange rustling sound from inside t e stump startled us. Becky looked inside. Two tiny yellow eyes peered back and puppy fangs glinted in t e semidarkness. Ralp ’s pup!

Had a dying instinct told im is mot erless offspring would be safe ere, as e ad been, wit t ose w o loved im? Hot tears spilled on baby fur as Becky gat ered t e trembling bundle in er arms.

“It’s all rig t, little ... Ralp ie,” s e murmured. “Don’t be afraid. T at’s my mom, and s e loves you, too.”
